Listening to the Sound of Rain

A gentle rain fell throughout the morning,
bringing the quiet atmosphere of Japan’s rainy season.
One of our overseas guests once spent the morning on the terrace,
simply reading a book while listening to the rain.
Watching that peaceful moment stayed with me.
Perhaps they were quietly teaching me that
a rainy day doesn’t need to be avoided—
it can simply be enjoyed.
So this morning,
I took a cup of coffee outside and listened.
Rain falling on the roof.
Raindrops touching the rice fields.
A cool breeze drifting through the countryside.
When you stop and listen,
the sounds become part of the landscape.
Summer sunshine is beautiful,
but the rainy season has a quiet beauty of its own.
Not a morning to accomplish something,
but a morning to simply be.
Before leaving, that guest wrote these words in our guestbook:
“Thank you for letting me experience ‘nothingness’.”
Our hope has always been simple:
“Nothing, and that’s just enough.”
It was moving to see a guest express the same feeling in their own words.
Sometimes,
the most memorable part of a journey
is simply listening to the rain.
