Between Summer and Autumn

“Finding a little autumn.”

Around Kakurekura, small changes are beginning to appear here and there.

After the rice harvest, while cutting the grass along the edges of the fields,

I noticed the first higanbana — red spider lilies beginning to bloom.

Many are still in bud, so more of their vivid red flowers will appear over the coming days.

These flowers often bloom in Japan around the time when summer begins to fade, before the deeper colors of autumn arrive.

Summer already feels as though it is passing.

And yet, the days are still warm, and the season of autumn leaves is still some way off.

If there were another season between summer and autumn, perhaps this is where we are now.

Looking at the red spider lilies against the blue sky,I felt, just for a moment, that quiet space between the two seasons.
